The Bigger Picture
2016

The Bigger Picture is a collaboration between the Centre for Innovation (Leiden University) and the World Press Photo Foundation. The initiative brings together the worlds of photography, data analytics and storytelling in a compelling visual platform, to take you beyond the frame. Starting with World Press Photo’s award-winning photographs, users are drawn into a new type of visual analytics. With each click, we expand the way you can look at news, events, and issues.

LUST was invited to create the first visual website for The Bigger Picture, as well as the broader platform. Because the theme of the pictures was about the refugee crisis, we spent time researching and developing four data visualizations around the crisis. In addition, we developed the concept that the data was in the picture. Clicking on a data square would zoom into the picture and a data visualization that used the pixels of the image as its grid. Clicking on that visualization would zoom further into the image and reveal another more specific data visualization.
